Sullivan Courthouse and jail in East Cambridge into a vibrant mixed-use development is nearly complete. Aldon Electric worked with GC John Moriarty & Associates on several key aspects of the complex renovation project. The Aldon team installed the entire fire alarm and stair pressurization systems along with the full life safety system within the tower. Aldon’s expert electricians also completed the full power distribution system including 3000 amp dedicated service switchboards for just the penthouse and a 600 kW generator. Aldon and the hard-working members of IBEW 103 also recently completed an energized transformer vault for the project - located in the same room as the building’s original vault built over 50 years ago. Despite the space and height constraints, the design called for a nine bay, 15kV, S&C Switchgear lineup and four 1000kVA 13.8kV to 480V transformers. The transformers feed a 4000A collector bus that connects to the building’s main switchboards. A great deal of coordination went into the demolition and construction of this vault. When complete, 40 Thorndike will include over 400,000 square feet of office/R&D space on the upper floors as well as 48 fully affordable apartments, and 15,000 square feet of ground floor amenity and retail space.
